New Orleans court’s fees illegal under state as well as federal law, group alleges
Civil rights attorneys have opened a second front in their war on fees at Orleans Parish Criminal District Court. In a letter sent Thursday, the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law accuses judges at the court of routinely imposing three categories of fees on poor defendants in violation of state law.
The High Cost of Unlicensed Bail Bonds
Baltimore’s Discount Bail Bonds is not a licensed bail-bond company in Maryland. Nonetheless, the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law found that BDBB is seeking to recover almost $900,000 in 149 current cases in state courts. BDBB seeks amounts from defendants in those cases as small as $400 and as large as $22,500.

Washington D.C. group wants Georgia barred from using 2015 boundaries in House District 105 race
