WASHINGTON, D.C. — Yesterday, President Trump shared a racist video on Truth Social, depicting Barack and Michelle Obama as apes. The video remained up for over 12 hours and was removed following bipartisan backlash.

President and Executive Director of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, Damon T. Hewitt,  issued this statement:

“Dehumanization is a lethal accelerant used to undermine Black political power and, too often, Black lives. A depiction of President Obama and Michelle Obama as apes is racist dehumanization. Full Stop. This is especially insulting during Black History Month. Coming from the highest office in the land, it risks further normalizing hate and provoking violence. Deleting a post isn’t accountability. We call on President Trump to apologize and repudiate this vile propaganda.”
