WASHINGTON, D.C., October 29, 2015 – This week, as people and organizations across the nation celebrate National Pro Bono Week, the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law (Lawyers’ Committee) honors the lawyers and law firms who have donated their time to assist the Lawyers’ Committee on critical civil rights matters over the years.
“Pro bono work is the foundation for which President John F. Kennedy called for the formation of the Lawyers’ Committee during the summer of 1963 and it remains one of our top priorities today,” said Nancy Anderson, director of the Lawyers’ Committee’s Legal Mobilization and Pro Bono Projects. “The unyielding support of law firms and lawyers offering pro bono support across the country is just as vital today as it was when we were founded.”
From 2012 to 2014, the lawyers and firms who support the organization on pro bono matters have donated 186,408 hours’ worth of time with a monetary value of more than $99 million, working on Election Protection, Clemency Project 2014, the Parental Readiness and Empowerment Program, voting rights, employment discrimination, educational opportunities, community development, mortgage scams and fair housing, along with transactional backing, legal research and amicus briefs.
“Without the generous assistance of these lawyers and law firms donating their time, the Lawyers’ Committee’s impactful litigation and programmatic areas would be severely limited,” said Anderson. “We are enormously grateful for their invaluable assistance, especially on behalf of our courageous clients.”
