WASHINGTON, D.C. – This week, the Senate is anticipated to bring the SAVE America Act to the floor for debate. If passed, the SAVE America Act will create additional barriers for eligible voters to register to vote and cast a ballot, and disrupt how elections are administered nationwide, mere months before the midterms.

In response, the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law issued this statement from its Policy Advisor for Voting Rights & Democracy, Chanel Sherrod:

“The SAVE America Act is blatantly anti-democratic and stands as a clear attempt to seize power and silence dissent. The Act would make voting needlessly complicated and result in the disfranchisement of millions of voters across the country. Key provisions in the bill, such as proof-of-citizenship and voter-ID requirements, would strip millions of Americans of their right to vote because they would be unable to produce the documents necessary to verify citizenship–like birth certificates and passports–without incurring significant expenses and spending hours obtaining these documents. This would also overburden election workers, who would be tasked with reviewing documents from all registered voters in their state, as well as people seeking to register or update their address information. Voters should be able to have the utmost trust in our country’s electoral system and in the officials who oversee it. The SAVE America Act is another scheme outlined in Project 2025 that will disenfranchise voters and undermine our democracy.

“We urge the Senate to preserve our nation’s elections. Reject this bill. And we urge voters to call their senators to demand that they keep our elections fair and accessible. Given all of the challenges facing our nation, the last thing we need to do is enact a modern-day poll tax that impacts millions of Americans and further erodes our democracy.”
