(Washington, D.C.) — U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) announced Thursday on the Senate floor that Richard Trumka, longtime president of the AFL-CIO, had passed away.
The following is a statement from Damon Hewitt, president and executive director of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law:
“Today, our nation has suffered a huge loss. Richard Trumka was not just an influential leader, he also was a fierce advocate for labor rights, empowering people of color to succeed in our workforce. He dedicated his career to fighting for the rights of working men and women. We extend our condolences to his family and wish them all the best during this painful time.”
