Following President Trump’s speech tonight, Shaylyn Cochran, deputy executive director of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, released the following statement:

“Tonight’s speech was not an update, but yet another rehashing of President Trump’s personal grievances about losing the 2020 election.

“We know that our elections are safe and secure, and claims of widespread voter fraud are myths to sow distrust in our elections. Repeating debunked allegations and wild conspiracy theories does not make them true. But it can create a pretext for policies that burden eligible voters, particularly Black voters and other communities that have historically faced discrimination at the ballot box.

“At the Lawyers’ Committee, we are working to ensure that every eligible American has access to the ballot box and that their votes are counted–especially Black voters and other voters of color who are mostly likely to be disenfranchised by anti-democratic policies like the SAVE America Act. We have been fighting for free and fair elections inside the courtroom and we are committed to continuing that fight by supporting voters directly.

“Don’t let this administration’s efforts or anyone confuse and intimidate you into not exercising your rights. If you have questions about your voting rights, your registration status, or what to expect at the polls, help is available right now. Call the free, non-partisan Election Protection Hotline at 866-OUR-VOTE or visit www.866ourvote.org for help every step of the way to cast a ballot. Assistance is available in multiple languages.

“Also, please be sure to read and share the Black Voter Survival Guide: a practical, plain-language guide on registration, ID requirements, mail-in voting, and what to do if you run into trouble at your polling place.”
