Damon Hewitt, President and Executive Director of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law,issued the following statement in response to the release of Brittney Griner from Russian detention:

“We are relieved and elated to learn that after nine unthinkable months in Russian custody, Brittney Griner is finally coming home. While this process took far longer than we hoped, we are grateful for her safe return. We applaud the Biden administration for following through on its promise to Brittney, her wife Cherelle, and to her family.

The Lawyers’ Committee joined several other civil rights organizations in repeatedly pushing the Biden administration to secure Brittney’s swift release, and countless Americans across this country worked tirelessly to ensure that Brittney was never far from our thoughts. This is a victory for all of the activists, athletes, community members, and leaders who never relented in their calls for Brittney’s release and who applied continuous pressure on our leaders to bring her home.”
