WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law’s (Lawyers’ Committee) President and Executive Director Kristen Clarke issued the following statement regarding U.S. Secretary of Education Nominee John B. King Jr.:

“Dr. John B. King Jr., has built a career that demonstrates a commitment and dedication to the principle of equal educational opportunity for all students. During his tenure as the top education official in the State of New York, he helped to strengthen public schools and promoted educational equity. Given the challenges that we face with public education today, our nation stands to benefit from Dr. King’s bold and visionary leadership.

Dr. King has already developed a strong track record of achievement in his capacity as Acting Secretary for the U.S. Department of Education.  The Lawyers’ Committee is confident in his ability to implement the nation’s new federal education law and ensure that the Every Student Succeeds Act closes the achievement gap and brings to bear equity in classrooms nationwide.

We urge swift confirmation of President Obama’s talented nominee, Dr. John B. King Jr., who would become the nation’s second African American U.S. Secretary of Education.”
