Standing Witness: Photo Highlights From the 2023 March on Washington
On August 26, the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, co-chaired the 60th anniversary of the March on Washington at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C.. It was a momentous event! Thousands of people joined the nation’s leading civil rights leaders and activists representing more than 60 partnering organizations. They called on the nation to recommit to improving the lives of Black people and others of color, as well LGBTQIA people, through passing legislation that will build economic opportunity, improve voting rights, ensure voter protection, among other demands. The anniversary was described as a commemoration, but a continuation, of the “dream” Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. originally outlined at the Lincoln Memorial in 1963.
“We must never forget the challenges that our leaders faced, the hatred that they endured, and the courage, resilience, and hope they displayed against seemingly insurmountable odds,”
– Damon Hewitt, president and executive director of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law.
“We’re here and ready to pick up this generational fight for equity. We’re marching toward a future built on Justice and compassion. Together, we can create an equitable world.”
– Damon Hewitt, president and executive director of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law.
“That meeting, June 21st, 1963 created the organization I now lead, the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights. Our mission is to ensure that black people and communities of color have the voice, the opportunity, and the power to ensure that the promise of democracy is real and not just words on paper.”
