DJI Overview

The Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization formed in 1963 at the request of President John F. Kennedy to mobilize the nation’s leading lawyers as agents of change in the Civil Rights Movement. Today, the Lawyers’ Committee uses legal advocacy to achieve racial justice, fighting both inside and outside the courts to ensure that Black people and other people of color have the voice, opportunity, and power to make the promises of our democracy real.

The Lawyers’ Committee’s Digital Justice Initiative works at the intersection of racial justice, technology, and privacy. Exploitative data practices, discriminatory algorithms, government and commercial surveillance, disinformation, and online hate disproportionately target and harm communities of color—especially Black Americans, immigrants, women of color, and LGBTQ+ people of color. Everyone should be entitled to equal enjoyment of the internet’s goods and services without fear of discrimination or reprisal.

We Want To Hear From You!

Artificial intelligence is shaping our digital lives, often in ways that are invisible and unchecked. It draws on vast amounts of personal data—from apps, web activity, and the companies you engage with. These technologies can deepen existing inequities.

We want to hear from you. Your input will help shape our advocacy, litigation, and educational resources to better protect civil rights in the age of AI.

Model Online Civil Rights Act

AI tools used in facial recognition, hiring, tenant screening, and credit scoring often reinforce racial bias and discrimination. The Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law advocates for equity-centered technology and has released the model “Online Civil Rights Act” to ensure AI is developed and used responsibly, protecting the civil rights of Black communities and other communities of color.
