NAACP Sues Justice Department to Protect Voters’ Privacy
With Voting Rights Under Siege, NAACP Vows to Protect Voter Privacy
HARRISBURG, Pa. – The NAACP, the NAACP Pennsylvania State Conference, and State Conference President Stacey Taylor have moved to intervene as parties in a lawsuit filed by the Department of Justice (DOJ) in which DOJ demands access to Pennsylvania’s sensitive voter information. DOJ suits were filed on September 25, 2025, in federal courts across six states, including Pennsylvania, in a blatant attempt to undermine voting rights.
Represented by the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law and Dilworth Paxson LLP, NAACP argues that the DOJ’s demand would violate the privacy of Pennsylvania residents and could discourage participation in the democratic process. Forcing the release of voter data could pave the way for intimidation, disenfranchisement, and wrongful purges of eligible voters from the rolls.
“The Trump administration’s actions represent yet another attack on our most fundamental right as Americans — the right to vote,” said Stacey Taylor, President of the NAACP Pennsylvania State Conference. “This is not about election integrity. This is about silencing voices, in particular Black and Latino voters. We refuse to stand by while voters are threatened and democracy is weakened. The NAACP Pennsylvania State Conference will fight in every courtroom and community to ensure that voters remain protected.”
The demand for Pennsylvania’s voter registration data threatens to deepen distrust in elections and disproportionately harm those most vulnerable to voter suppression, including young people, naturalized citizens, and voters with past criminal convictions who have returned to civic life.
The NAACP Pennsylvania State Conference will continue to update the public as the case proceeds through the courts.
Established in 1934, the NAACP Pennsylvania State Conference works diligently to carry out the mission of the NAACP, to “achieve equity, political rights, and social inclusion by advancing policies and practices that expand human and civil rights, eliminate discrimination, and accelerate the well-being, education, and economic security of Black people and all persons of color.” Visit our website for more information at pastatenaacp.org.
