WASHINGTON, D.C., October 19, 2009 - Today, Tanya Clay House, Esq., joined the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law as public policy director.  With 10 years of political experience, Mrs. House will serve as the organization's principal representative on Capitol Hill and in state and local legislative bodies.    Additionally, she will coordinate the Lawyers' Committee's communications efforts with the White House and federal, state and local agency officials.

Working closely with Lawyers' Committee Executive Director Barbara Arnwine and all Committee projects, Mrs. House will prepare testimony for Congressional Committee, state and local hearings and panels, and represent the organization in coalitions poised to advocate for civil rights priorities.  She will also serve as a principal liaison to the Lawyers' Committee's sister organizations across the country.

"The Lawyers' Committee is delighted to have Mrs. House's exemplary public policy experience and shared commitment of working toward justice and equality for all," said Mrs. Arnwine.  "I am confident that she will provide leadership and vision in effectuating progress on key civil rights matters."

Prior to joining the Lawyers' Committee, Mrs. House was public policy director at People For the American Way (PFAW) where she served as chief legislative lobbyist on Capitol Hill and with the Executive Branch.  She focused on various issues including judicial nominations, education, the religious right, civil rights and liberties, immigration, church/state, electoral reform and affirmative action.

"I am delighted to work directly with one of the most widely respected and admired civil rights organizations in this country," said Mrs. House.  "In this new capacity, I look forward to continuing this fight to defend and promote the values expressed in the Constitution and our civil rights statutes."

Tanya Clay House, formerly of Louisville, Kentucky, earned her B.A. in political science from the University of Michigan.  She earned her J.D. from the University of Texas School of Law in 1999.

The Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law (LCCRUL), a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization, was formed in 1963 at the request of President John F. Kennedy to involve the private bar in providing legal services to address racial discrimination. The principal mission of the Lawyers' Committee is to secure, through the rule of law, equal justice under law, particularly in the areas of fair housing and fair lending, community development, employment discrimination, voting, education and environmental justice.  For more information about the LCCRUL, visit www.lawyerscommittee.org.
