Lawyers Committee Urges Chief Justice John Roberts
to Protect the Freedoms of Every American
(Washington, DC) Today, by a vote of 78-22,
the Senate confirmed John G. Roberts as the next Chief
Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. During the confirmation
process, the Lawyers Committee raised serious
concerns about Judge Robertss civil rights record.
It remains our hope that Chief Justice Roberts will
provide the type of leadership on the Court that embraces
diversity and equal justice for all.
With a second nomination to fill Justice OConnors
seat expected soon, the Lawyers Committee calls
on President Bush to nominate a mainstream candidate
in order to maintain the critical balance of the Court.
The stakes are enormous in replacing Justice OConnor.
Therefore, the Lawyers Committee strongly urges
President Bush to nominate a candidate committed to
upholding and enforcing our nations civil rights
laws.
The
Lawyers Committee is an over forty-year old
nonpartisan, nonprofit civil rights legal organization,
formed in 1963 at the request of President John F.
Kennedy to provide legal services to address racial
discrimination.
