Meeting
in New Orleans on March 28, 2006
|
Second Wind, a nonprofit grassroots organization formed by
the Lawyers' Committee and pro bono attorneys from Stroock
& Stroock & Lavan and Citigroup, seeks to revitalize
the New Orleans small business community affected by Hurricane
Katrina by obtaining relief grants and other sources of assistance.
Small businesses constitute the backbone of the New Orleans
economy, employing tens of thousands of residents and accounting
for hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue and taxes.
Thus, Second Wind understands that in helping the small business
community recover, it is also assisting in the rebuilding
of New Orleans.
Despite the central role small businesses have played in the
economy of New Orleans, no funding has been earmarked for
small business grants. Second Wind wants to help small businesses
obtain financial assistance, and, in addition, address issues
of common concern to the small business community. These include:
relief program reform, insurance settlement negotiation, debt
reduction, bridge loans, commercial lease issues, tax incentives,
and infrastructure repair.
If you would like to learn how Second Wind and small businesses
are working toward renewing their role in the New Orleans
economy, please visit www.secondwindnola.org.
