The
Lawyers' Committee Minority Business Project strives to help minority
entrepreneurs participate in every aspect of the American
economy. Launched in 2003, the Project promotes equal business
opportunities for minority-owned firms.
Studies
from across the country demonstrate that minorities face
discrimination in establishing businesses and competing
for contracts in the public and private sectors. For example,
minority-owned businesses have greater difficulty securing
credit, obtaining bonding, and winning bids all of
which are crucial to the formation, growth and utilization
of these firms.
Unfortunately, there is no federal or state enforcement
mechanism to identify and address discrimination in the
marketplace. As a means of attacking this discrimination,
federal, state and local governments adopt affirmative action
programs that include outreach, recruitment and minority
business participation goals. Consistent with the historic
mission of the Lawyers' Committee, the Minority Business
Project works to advance affirmative action and implement
innovative ways to ensure that minorities can compete and
succeed in the marketplace. The Project aims to meet this
objective through litigation, expanded public policy work,
enhanced research and public education activities, greater
coordination with national and state proponents of affirmative
action, and increased corporate collaboration.
