"French Explorers and Indians"
by Karl R. Free (1903-1947)
1937, Oil on Canvas
This mural depicts the arrival of the French on June 22, 1564 to present-day
Florida. There are sixteen half-clothed American Indians in the painting. The
women are bare-breasted and all of the men have hair fashioned into mohawks.
In the background is a stone edifice inscribed with a coat-of-arms. To the left
and around the stone edifice, American Indians appear to be both worshipping
the stone edifice and offering gifts to the French explorers.
