Nekima
Levy-Pounds
On
September 13, 2001, Nekima Levy-Pounds joined the
Lawyer's Committee as the fourth recipient of The George
N. Lindsay Civil Rights Legal Fellowship. Nekima received
her undergraduate degree in African-American Studies from
the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. She
received her JD degree this past spring from the University
of Illinois College of Law in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois.
While in law school, Nekima interned at Land of Lincoln
Legal Assistance in Champaign, Illinois. She also spent
an unprecedented three semesters in the university's College
of Law Clinic where she served as a teaching assistant and
represented indigent clients in the area of family law.
Nekima has won numerous awards for her commitment to public
interest and was chosen by her law school classmates to
speak on their behalf at this year's commencement ceremony.
Nekima was also featured in the spring issue of The Jurist,
the alumni publication for the University of Illinois College
of Law.
