George
N. Lindsay, a longtime partner in the law firm of Debevoise
& Plimpton, served the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights
Under Law with dedication and eloquence for more than
a quarter century. As Co-Chair from 1969-1971, he helped
to establish an office of the Committee in Cairo, Illinois
in response to racial violence by white supremacists.
As a Chair of the Committee's Southern Africa Project
AdvisoryCommittee, he worked tirelessly to see the end
of apartheid in that troubled region.
Throughout
his esteemed legal career, Mr. Lindsay fought against
blatant and subtle forms of racial discrimination. He
perceived the inextricable link between apartheid in South
Africa and Namibia, and protracted racial discrimination
in the United States. He spoke fervently in support of
the Committee's voting rights work, and encouraged the
Committee to take a more active role in public policy
advocacy -- particularly on behalf of people living in
poverty. In these efforts, he not only worked energetically
himself, but used his enormous intellect, enthusiasm,
and decency to inspire many others to join this important
work.
The
George N. Lindsay Civil Rights Legal Fellowship
The
Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law has established
The George N. Lindsay Civil Rights Legal Fellowship in honor
of a committed advocate of equal justice under law both
in the United States and abroad. The Fellowship is made
possible through the generous contributions of the Lindsay
family, the law firm of Debevoise & Plimpton, and friends
and colleagues of George N. Lindsay.
The
Lindsay endowment supports a one year fellowship. In the
future, we expect that the Fund will support Fellowships
of a two year duration. Candidates chosen will be recent
law school graduates who reflect the highest standards of
volunteer service, legal acumen, and vision in the tradition
of George Lindsay's public service and civil rights advocacy.
The Fellow will work with the Committee's staff as it engages
in litigation, public policy advocacy, and public education
activities.
The
Lawyers' Committee continues to accept donations to endow
the Fellowship. Individuals wishing to make a gift
are asked to make their checks payable to The George N.
Lindsay Civil Rights Legal Fellowship. Please
mail contributions
to the Lawyers'
Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, 1401 New York Avenue,
N.W., Suite 400, Washington, D.C. 20005. Contributions are
tax deductible.
