Executive Assistant
For Chief Counsel/Senior Deputy Director
The Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law invites applications for the position of Executive Assistant for the Chief Counsel/Senior Deputy Director ("Chief Counsel"). The Chief Counsel supervises the legal and policy program and programmatic planning for the Committee, and has external relations and executive management responsibilities. The Executive Assistant position directly supports the Chief Counsel and coordinates communications, plans and organizes meetings, activities and travel, summarizes information and written material, organizes matters for decisions, tracks implementation and follow-up on matters, carries out certain administrative duties, coordinates with other aspects of management, and conducts some policy analysis for and on behalf of the Chief Counsel, among other responsibilities. The position also coordinates with and provides some support to the Deputy Director for Legal Programs, the Public Policy Counsel, and the Pro Bono Counsel.
The position serves as liaison between the Chief Counsel and Board members, managers, staff, law firms, legal, public interest and civil rights organizations, media and the public on a wide variety of issues and matters; manages the Chief Counsel’s calendar, appointments and meetings; screens, takes, initiates and returns phone calls; initiates correspondence and reviews, analyzes and prepares responses to correspondence received; organizes matters for decision and monitors implementation and follow-through on programmatic, policy and management activities; researches and summarizes materials and issues; creates and maintains comprehensive legal, research, policy and management files; organizes and coordinates internal and external meetings and conferences; coordinates with various managers and Board members on behalf of the Chief Counsel; and assists in communications. The position also requires the ability to effectively handle secretarial and administrative assignments, including, organizing and managing substantial paperwork, copying, typing, editing, making travel arrangements, and utilizing databases.
Candidates must be able to demonstrate interest and participation in civil rights or public interest issues, as well as program administration. Excellent oral and written communication skills are required. Candidates must have strong interpersonal, administrative, and organizational skills. Candidate must be extremely detail-oriented, able to function independently and exercise discretion and judgment in sensitive and potentially controversial matters. Excellent computer skills, Internet research, word processing, and database management are required. Ability to initiate work and follow-through with minimal supervision as well as work under pressure, adapt to changing priorities, and balance competing assignments is necessary.
