URGENT ALERT!
U.S. House of Representatives Vote on Voting Rights Act
Set for Today;
Thursday, July 13th
Call Your Representative Now! Congress Must Act
Immediately to Renew and Restore the Voting Rights Act Without
Amendments!
July 13, 2006 Your toll-free phone call is needed
right now. Today, the House of Representatives will
vote on whether it should renew and restore the Voting Rights
Act (VRA), the landmark law that has protected the right
to vote for millions of Americans.
Your Member of Congress needs to hear from you today about
the importance of ensuring that the Voting Rights Act passes
without amendment. A special toll-free number (866-808-0065)
will connect you to the Capitol Switchboard. The operator
can then transfer you directly to your representatives
office.
Unfortunately, a small group of lawmakers from states with
the worst records of voter discrimination have introduced
harmful amendments to the legislation that if enacted, would
severely weaken the Voting Rights Act.
Call 866-808-0065 and tell your representative to:
1. Support the Fannie Lou Hamer, Rosa Parks, and Coretta
Scott King Voting Rights Act Reauthorization and Amendments
Act of 2006 (H.R. 9), and oppose any attempts to add weakening
amendments.
2. Congress must not allow a small group of legislators
to turn back the clock on the progress that has been made
over the past 40 years.
After placing your call, please notify Public Policy Counsel,
Kim Alton, at kalton@lawyerscommittee.org.
Kim will be tracking the responses you receive from your
representatives.
