URGENT!!!
- Call Members of Senate to Oppose John Ashcroft as Attorney
General
Members
of the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Have Urged the
Senate to Reject the Nomination of John D. Ashcroft as Attorney
General of the United States.
Yesterday,
the Senate Judiciary Committee voted to approve the nomination
of John Ashcroft as Attorney General (10-8.) Today, the
full Senate will start debate on the floor and a vote is
likely to occur before the end of the week. It is critical
that members of the Board who are concerned about John Ashcroft's
ability to be the chief law enforcement officer for all
Americans raise their concerns immediately with members
of the Senate.
The
Lawyers' Committee, after careful review of Senator Ashcroft's
entire public record, especially his civil rights record
as the Attorney General and Governor of Missouri, and then
as a United States Senator, concluded that he is not qualified
to provide the leadership necessary for the Department of
Justice.
As
a Board member of the Lawyers' Committee, the Senators need
to know your serious concerns about whether this nominee
will enforce current laws, especially, critical civil rights
laws, so that our nation continues to promote equal justice
for all Americans.
WHAT
IS NEEDED?:
Contact
members of the Senate to inform them that you oppose the
nomination of John D. Ashcroft as Attorney General of
the United States.

IMPORTANT
POINTS:
- John
Ashcroft's Record Demonstrates That He Does Not Possess
the Qualities Necessary to Retain the Department of Justice's
Ongoing Commitment to Enforce and Defend Our Nation's
Civil Rights Laws, Promote Equality and Justice for All
Americans, and Ensure the Rule of Law.
- Mr.
Ashcroft's Record Fails to Demonstrate a Commitment to
Enforcing the Constitution and Civil Rights Laws. He Has
Opposed Appropriately Tailored Affirmative Action Measures
Designed to Remedy Present and past Discrimination; He
Vigorously Opposed Efforts to Desegregate St. Louis' Public
Schools; He Rejected Bill Lann Lee to Be Assistant Attorney
General for Civil Rights Because of Mr. Lee's Support
for Affirmative Action; and He Vetoed Bills as Governor
That Would Have Made it Easier for Citizens of Missouri
to Register to Vote.
- John
Ashcroft Lacks the Temperament and Objectivity Required
to Be an Effective Attorney General He Misrepresented
Judge Ronnie White's Record; He Gave a Commencement Speech
at Bob Jones University, an Institution with a Deep History
of Racial Intolerance; and made Racially Insensitive Comments
to Southern Partisan, Indicating a Temperament
That Is Divisive.
