Carlean Ponder

Associate Counsel, National Campaign for Fair Elections

Carlean Ponder, associate counsel with the National Campaign for Fair Elections in the Voting Rights Project of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law since early 2008, works closely with attorneys and non-profit organizations across the country to implement election administration reforms with municipal and state election administration officials.  She also assists with attorney recruitment, training and deployment for Election Protection operations.

Additionally, Ponder litigates voting rights cases before federal courts on behalf of organizations seeking fair administration of voting laws on behalf of their constituencies.

Prior to joining the Lawyers’ Committee, her work experience includes work as a litigation associate in Washington, D.C. and advocacy and public affairs work on behalf of progressive policy organizations.   She serves as a mentor with the Urban League and is co-founder of the University of Michigan’s African American Alumni Council (D.C. Chapter).

Ponder received a juris doctorate degree from the University of Illinois College of Law and a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the University of Michigan.

The Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law (LCCRUL), a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization, was formed in 1963 at the request of President John F. Kennedy to involve the private bar in providing legal services to address racial discrimination. The principal mission of the Lawyers’ Committee is to secure, through the rule of law, equal justice under law, particularly in the areas of housing, community development, employment, voting, education and environmental justice.  For more information about the LCCRUL, visit www.lawyerscommittee.org.
